Finding a New Path with ReFocus
When John first joined ReFocus in Year 9, he was facing significant challenges at his previous secondary school. Traditional classroom learning didn’t suit his needs — his behaviour and learning difficulties created barriers that left him feeling frustrated and disengaged. Like many students who join ReFocus, John simply needed a different kind of education; one that understood him as a person, not just a pupil.
At first, school felt like a battle. He struggled to see the value in education, often finding himself behind in class and making poor choices outside of school. But things began to change when he walked through the doors at ReFocus.
A School That Adapts to the Learner
From the moment John arrived, the team at ReFocus worked closely with both him and his family to create a personalised support plan. Lessons were adapted to his learning style, giving him the space to succeed at his own pace.
Through the emotional literacy programme, John learned how to understand and manage his emotions, communicate effectively, and make sense of the world around him. This programme quickly became a cornerstone of his progress and helped him rebuild his self-belief.

John’s transformation was not instant — it was the result of perseverance, encouragement, and genuine connection. With consistent support and a nurturing environment, he began to thrive. His teachers describe him as “funny, articulate and kind” — qualities that came to shine as his confidence grew.
When the time came to leave ReFocus, John didn’t just meet expectations; he exceeded them. He achieved nine qualifications, including Level 2 in both English and Maths — a milestone that once felt out of reach.
Ready for the Next Chapter
Today, John is employed as a Property maintenance apprentice — right here at ReFocus. It’s a fitting full circle moment: the student who once doubted the value of education now contributes daily to the environment that helped change his life.
John proudly says that his “previous poor choices are behind him” and often shares his gratitude to the staff who supported him through thick and thin. And of course, none of it would have been possible without the unwavering encouragement of his Nan.
